Student of the month: Lexi T!

Picture
CSM is proud to announce that May's student of the month is Lexi Tieffel!

Lexi is 13-year old and has a beautiful voice! We love watching her performances on our recitals or her Youtube Channel!
A natural superstar, Lexi not only sings but is learning how to play the piano to enhance her music skills!

Find out more about her music journey below:

What inspired you to learn how to sing, and play the piano?
I have loved being a performer from my earliest memories. My parents have shown me videos where I put on “shows” singing and dancing with my Barbie guitar and toy microphone. I chose to play the piano to increase my musical ability.

Do you have any favorite songs?
Some of my favorites are One Margarita by Luke Bryan, Fighting for Me by Riley Clemmons, and My Church by Maren Morris.

What do you like about taking lessons at CSM?
Mrs. Daniele and Ms. Neha have been amazing teachers with tips and support for any song I choose to take on, especially when they are challenging.

How does music influence your life?
I love to perform and to touch people’s lives through all the opportunities that I’ve been blessed to have, such as recitals and being on stage at my church.

What do you like to do in your free time?
I like to make TikTok videos, bake desserts with my aunt, play with friends, annoy my younger brother, and of course practice piano and voice - Little girl with Big Stage Dreams! I also post my singing on my YouTube channel (LoudmouthLexi).

Students of the month spotlight:
Ben and Ella Strebeck
Ben and Ella have been taking guitar lessons for more than 2 years now! Every week, they meet with Mr.Rob and learn songs and new techniques at their shared lesson. It all started when their grandparents gifted them two guitars.

Ben and Ella shared a little bit of their musical journey with us:

-What inspired you to learn the guitar?
Our grandma and grandpa bought guitars for us to learn how to play together. Our grandpa also plays the guitar.

-Tell us more about your lessons at CSM!
We enjoy being able to do guitar lessons from home on Skype. Mr. Rob is a great teacher! He is really nice and encouraging.

-How does music influence your life?
Ella:I like listening to music every chance I get. I use it as a creative outlet to express myself.
Ben: I listen to music all the time by myself and with my friends and family. It helps me relax and puts me in a good mood

-What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
Ella: I enjoy singing, dancing, baking, crafts, and playing board and card games.
Ben: In my free time I run, play soccer, basketball, and baseball. I also like to jump on the trampoline and play my PS4 with my friends.

CSM is proud of Ben and Ella's accomplishments and we hope they continue making music together!
Teacher of the Month:
Ms. Julie
Picture
This month, our teacher of the month spotlight goes to Ms.Julie! She has been teaching at CSM for about 4 years now, and her students really enjoy learning from her!

Originally from Atlanta, GA, she is currently finishing up her Artist Diploma at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where she also completed her Master’s degree. Ms.Julie completed a Bachelor of Music in Violin Performance and a Bachelor of Science in Psychology at the University of Georgia in Athens, GA. She is an active and versatile freelancer, performing with regional orchestras in Illinois and Indiana. She has also recorded and performed with pop artists in the Athens and Atlanta area.

Ms.Julie believes in taking students from wherever they are - from a total beginner to an adult with childhood music experience to someone with several years of playing under their belt - and working with them in whatever way fits their personality, needs, and pace. There is no timeline, and everyone learns differently! She also tries to instill critical thinking skills by challenging them to think differently about music and helping them figure out practical ways to solve the problems they may encounter. Her hope is that no matter where their musical journey takes them, they will have the tools needed to learn whatever instrument they want and, most importantly, lifelong love and appreciation of music.

When she’s not practicing or performing, Ms.Julie enjoys traveling, hiking, cooking, baking, and spending time with her family, friends, and dog (Ginger) and cat (Angelkitty).

Student of the month: Oona J.

Picture
Oona has been taking piano lessons for years with us! She is 10 years old and started playing piano at age 5. Now, she plays various other instruments besides the piano, including violin, mandolin, drums, theremin, musical saw, guitar, and ukulele. Oona shared some interesting facts about her musical journey and what she treasures about CSM lessons! Check out her interview:

1-What inspired you to learn the piano?
Oona: "I enjoyed banging on a plastic toy piano in our living room. Now, I still don't have a real wooden piano, but my keyboard is close enough.

2-Tell us more about your lessons at CSM!
I like having my own room to practice in. In my house, the entire bottom floor is connected, so there is always noise when I practice. My favorite part, however, is definitely that big white dog that comes before recitals.

3- What's your favorite song?
Yes, currently, I like the soundtrack for the space exploration video game Outer Wilds.

4-How does music influence your life?
It influences me to the point that I can't sleep without it.

5-What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
Talk to my dogs like they are human beings, bake(A LOT), draw, and practice my other seven instruments that I play."

CSM is proud of Oona's accomplishments and we wish her a bright future, filled with joy and music!

Teacher of the Month: Ms.Ming

Picture

Ms.Ming is a pianist who began developing her love for music at an early age. She is currently pursuing a Doctorate in Piano Performance degree at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Ms.Ming started teaching at CSM last Summer and we can tell students love to work with her!

We enjoyed chatting with Ms.Ming and learning more about her background. Here's the full scope:
1- When did you first start learning an instrument?
I studied piano with my mother, a piano professor, and I started when I was 3 years old. During aural skills training at age 5, we discovered that I have perfect pitch. When I was this age, my mother introduced me to the music of J.S. Bach, Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, and Schubert.

2- Please share with us your Music Education Philosophy.
I strive to foster a deep appreciation and understanding of music. Instead of simply telling students to spend more hours practicing, I find that students improve faster when they understand the logic behind the music. Establishing efficient practice techniques and sight-reading skills is essential for every student's repertoire.

3- What composer do you enjoy playing the most?
I enjoy playing music by Maurice Ravel. He was a French composer, and while he is best known for his orchestral piece, “Bolero,” he also wrote some of the most important and difficult works for piano of the early twentieth century. I recently performed his work, Le Tombeau de Couperin, on one of my doctoral recitals. Even though it requires virtuosic technique, it is also beautiful to listen to and fun to play!

4- What other music styles do you like to play on the piano?
I like playing music from the 20th and 21st centuries. My favorite composers include Alexander Scriabin, Claude Debussy, Toru Takemitsu, Sergi Prokofiev, and Gyorgy Ligeti. These composers wrote complicated pieces that take a long time to understand and perfect, but I enjoy the process of slowly untangling the mysteries they present and helping my audience appreciate them.

5- Do you have any hobbies? What do you like to do in your free time?
I enjoy composing in my free time. Although I used to enjoy writing stories, I found that composing gives me a unique opportunity to express myself without the boundaries of language, and it allows me to let my imagination run free. I also like spending time with my husband, Steve, who has a Ph.D. in musicology. We enjoy listening to music, watching movies, and going for walks together. My favorite movies include Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, and The Proposal.

Below is the link to one of Ms.Ming's beautiful performances:

Article of the Month:
The benefits of playing music help your brain more than any other activity.
by John Rampton

Picture
"Science has shown that musical training can change brain structure and function for the better. It can also improve long-term memory and lead to better brain development for those who start at a young age."

This article sheds some light on the reasons why musicians develop great cognitive skills through life.

Spring Break

Tuesday, Mar 16- Sunday, Mar 21

Check out the 2020-2021 School Calendar here!

Student of the month:
Hector Kircher

Hector is a 12 years old student who started learning the violin about 5 months ago!

He comes from a very musical family and is highly motivated! We had a quick chat with him about his musical journey and his experience at CSM:

1-What inspired you to learn the violin?
Hector: "I got motivated when I saw my (younger) sister playing my composition in her cello recital. I wanted to start learning an instrument. My mother said, "Good to hear that you want to learn to play something as for the choice of instrument. Do you want to learn violin, or violin, or violin?" I chose the second option."

2-Tell us more about your lessons at CSM!
"I like it, especially because I have the option of taking 15-minute lessons. Traditional 30-minute lessons are a bit too long for me. I like my teacher (Ms.Julie) because she is very patient with me."

3- What's your favorite song?
"Wisdom of Huwani, composed by me. This is what I played in the last CSM recital too."

4-How does music influence your life?
"Composing music has given me lots of happiness. I first sing what sounds good to me. Then my mother puts instrumentations to my songs and makes them sound impressive. Those songs are then used in the movies that my parents make. By the way, "Huwani" in my answer to question 3 is a wise-looking alligator who says many silly wise-sounding phrases."

5-What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
"I like to compose music. But I spend most of my free time programming. I also like to make comics. I have made many stories with my sister."

We are very proud of Hector's accomplishments in music and we can't wait to hear his next compositions at our recitals!!

Teacher of the Month:
Mr.Robert Diaz (Guitar/Drum instructor)

The Champaign School of Music is fortunate to have amazing instructors who work hard to help students accomplish their musical goals!

Mr.Robert started teaching for us last fall, and we loved watching his students perform on the CSM online recital!

Do you want to learn more about his story and how he got to be a musician? Check out the interview below:

1- When did you first start learning an instrument?

My first instrument was actually the piano! Mrs. Coutts was my first music teacher back when I was 8 years old. From there, I started teaching myself guitar around the age of 11 or 12. The first two songs I learned were "Smells Like Teen Spirit" by Nirvana and "Chop Suey!" by System Of A Down. Around the same time, I started taking lessons at a local music store for drumset and percussion. The guitar and drums have been my main focus since then!

2- What music genre/style do you enjoy the most?

My favorite music varies quite a bit. I've found music I love in genres, from hip-hop and R&B to punk rock and metal, to even softer styles like jazz, classical, and folk music! I love playing loud music on the drumset and quieter music on the acoustic guitar. It all just depends on what I'm in the mood for!

3- Teaching philosophy - please share with us a little bit of your teaching experience:

Seeing my students grow and appreciate their instrument makes teaching such a rewarding experience for me. I get excited to see my students excited! It's been a pleasure to help my students progress through their musical journeys, moving from the most basic chords and melodies to eventually learning challenging songs from the radio. They're the ones putting in the work - I'm just lucky to be a part of it! I am also so thankful for Daniele and Holly at the Champaign School of Music for providing such a supportive and fun learning environment for my students and me.

4- Favorite things to do in your free time?

Before the pandemic hit, I enjoyed going out with friends to see live concerts and comedy shows. Lately, though, I've been catching up on some TV shows and movies that I'd meant to watch forever! Bob's Burgers has been my new favorite show, and I highly recommend the new Pixar movie, Soul! I've also spent a lot of my newfound free time playing with my cat, Bean, and unwinding with my favorite video games, Sims 4 and Rocket League!

Article of the Month:This is your brain in music.
by Cory Turnerr

" Musical training doesn't just improve your ear for music - it also helps your ear for speech. That's the takeaway from an unusual new study published in The Journal of Neuroscience. Researchers found that kids who took music lessons for two years didn't just get better at playing the trombone or violin; they found that playing music also helped kids' brains process language."
