Articles of the Month: How to stop nagging your child to practice their musical instrument by Timothy McKenry Parent encouragement, though well-intended, can quickly descend into nagging. And the reality of a child learning an instrument at home - the unpolished sounds, the seemingly incessant technical work (scales and arpeggios) - can challenge the family dynamic. So, what can parents do to encourage their children to practise? The following practical tips are drawn from multiple studies conducted by musicians, teachers and educational psychologists. Check out This Article Frequently Asked Questions About Music Therapy by Laura Tam What is music therapy? Music Therapy is an established healthcare profession that uses music to address all aspects of wellness, including physical, emotional, cognitive, and social areas across the lifespan. Who can benefit from music therapy? Music therapists work with individuals from birth to end of life, using music as a tool to address developmental needs and improve the quality of life for each individual. What does a typical music therapy session look like? In music therapy, a client will participate in various music experiences. Whether that may be making, listening or moving to music, each experience is designed with individualized goals in mind to help improve areas such as communication, pain and anxiety reduction, social skills, physical motor skills, and overall wellness. What is the difference between music therapy and adaptive lessons? The primary focus of music therapy is to use music as an effective tool to help improve non-musical goals (including communication, social skills, physical motor skills, and cognitive skills). In an adaptive lesson, the primary focus is to learn musical skills or learn to play a musical instrument. In an adaptive lesson, teaching adaptations such as giving special attention to sensory-needs, added use of visual aids, developmentally-appropriate strategies, and support for anxiety and coping skills would be implemented to help students comfortably and effectively learn an instrument and grow as a musician. Ms.Laura is a Music Therapist and is currently a member of our Teacher's team! August and September Question of the Month! A certain song can make us feel happy, sad, energetic, or relaxed. Because music can have such an impact on a person's mindset and well-being, it should come as no surprise that music therapy has been studied for use in managing numerous medical conditions.
